CODE RED SOUND SYSTEM
Biography
Code Red was started in 2001 as part of the wave of new sounds to emerge in the post 90's dancehall scene. Sounds tend to trend and emerge in groups, and the early new millennium was no different. Code Red, however, quickly set itself apart, by definitively becoming the most creative and fastest growing sound in Jamaica, and was quickly booked on all of the biggest events on the dancehall scene in Jamaica within their first year.
From R.A.S. promotions; one of Kingston and Portmore's biggest yearly events, to Fully Loaded; the biggest beach party in Jamaica. This was due highly to the reputations of the selectors that formed Code Red, and also the quality of playing that was brought by Code Red to the music scene in terms of creativity and energy.
The forming members of Code Red were Master Lee and Dj Rush. Edward Collins a.k.a. Master Lee was the veteran selector that formed the backbone of the 90's sound legend Travelers, and had left to transform himself into a cornerstone of the dancehall music studio business, as well as a producer of dancehall and culture music.
Russell 'Dj Rush' Alexander took years of remixing skills developed in New York's gritty rap scene and made a name locally for himself on the innovative sound system Black Talon, effectively pronouncing himself the Remix King. The plan from early on was simple; combine the most talented and promising individuals of the time, and form a musical Dream Team with no 'weak link in the fence'. With this formidable team Jamaica soon embraced Code Red in an unprecedented way.
After conquering the local Kingston scene, the sound began touring the southern UnitedStates and Caribbean, gaining some international experience and spreading their reputation. The overwhelming demand for the sound at the time proved more than could be managed, so the need for more members emerged.
Another individual that had recently won RJR Radio DJ Richie B's island wide music competition caught Code Red's attention, and was immediately recruited to be a part of the Dream Team. Without hesitation, Devon 'Blade' Chambers took up an opportunity that couldn't be passed up on, since the waves that were being made by Code Red could not be ignored.
Since the team of four was formed, the sound hasn't looked back. Hailed as the best sound system for Fully Loaded 2004, the sound proved itself to be a strong contender.
In Fully Loaded 2005, they moved up a notch by showing they were on caliber with greats like Tony Matterhorn by standing toe to toe in front of the thousands of Loaded patrons. These initial performances caused the stage show fans of Jamaica to start dubbing Fully Loaded as Fully Coded. The reach of Code Red began to extend, and the sound became a permanent fixture in musical trendsetters Tivoli Gardens, alongside Stone Love and new sensation Passa Passa's Swatch. Events in West Kingston that are now staples for Code Red are Passa Passa's Anniversary, Jim Brown's Memorial, and West Kingston's Jamboree plus a host of others.
In 2006 Code Red was the primetime sound at Stone Love's anniversary and Asylum's anniversary.
Since 2004 Code Red has also been the resident DJ for Irish and Chin's 'Death Before Dishonour' World Clash events held every Easter in Montego Bay Jamaica for crowds well exceeding ten thousand people. Because of their ability to play for all types of crowds, Code Red for years, has been the resident Dj for the largest oldies party in Jamaica Heineken's 'Yesterdays', as well as the largest family oriented event in Jamaica, 'Pepsi Teen Splash'. In 2006 Fully Loaded, Mr. Loaded himself Tony Matterhorn passed on the trophy and jis title to Code Red, hailing it as the 'future'. In 2007 after coming off of tour, and entering Fully Loaded (Coded) 2007 as the new champions of the event,
Code Red were the closing act of the show, going head to head in a clash with veteran selector Fire Linx. The crowd and Tony Matterhorn hailed Code Red dominant, after crushing Fire Linx.
Code Red has played in every parish of Jamaica, and has toured the world, playing in Barbados, Bermuda, St. Croix, St Thomas VI, Cayman Islands, Belize, New York, Atlanta, Miami, Boston, Chicago, London, Ottawa, Toronto and many places in between alongside all the great names in the business.
With new members Chris Dymond and Dj Lank rounding out the Dream Team, the sound is poised for yet another amazing year as the youngest, greatest, and fastest growing sound in Jamaica.
Influences
Code Red has numerous influences.. like: Stone Love, Tony Matterhorn, DJ Ray Double R, Dj Kid Capri, DJ Silver D, Renaissance, Black Chiney, and Mighty Crown pretty much sum up the sounds and DJ's that have influenced Code Red over the years. CodeRed sends Nuff Respect to them all!!
