Wilkswood Reggae Festival will see artists take to the stage in the middle of the Purbeck countrysideA FESTIVAL which aims to provide some cross-cultural, pan-generational harmony will be held near Swanage. The Wilkswood Reggae Festival will take place from Friday July 14 to Sunday July 16 in the middle of the Purbeck countryside. It is a small family-friendly festival which will feature more than 40 reggae and ska artists, soundsystems, deejays, selectors, acoustic acts, comedians and poets across three stages. Billed first and foremost as a family festival, the Wilkswood Reggae Festival is now in its second year and is the brainchild of Dubwood Productions, a collaboration between Simon and Nicky Coppack, the landlords of the Scott Arms in Kingston (near Corfe Castle, not Jamaica) and members of Dubheart, Bournemouth’s own international reggae stars. As Dave ‘Daddy-U’ Mountjoy, festival co-founder and Dubheart keyboardist explains: “Reggae has always been about love and unity and it has been bringing people of all ages, colours and cultures together for decades." The Main Stage lineup features an compelling mix of genuine reggae legends - including Brinsley ‘Aswad’ Forde, Tippa Irie, Janet ‘Silly Games’ Kay and Mad Professor - alongside fresh, modern torch-bearers like roots rockers Dubheart, ska sorcerers Bombskare, the world fusion of Afro Tallawah and pioneering producer Prince Fatty. The Selector Stage brings together some of the country’s mightiest soundsystem setups (imagine the deep bass rhythms of Notting Hill Carnival relocated to the great outdoors) and includes Mikey Dread’s majestic Channel One Sound, the heavyweight dancehall of Bristol’s Unique Star and the live percussive dub of Gavin ‘Fullness’ Sant. The DJ Derek Memorial Stage - named in honour of the legendary Bristolian DJ who sadly passed away last year - will be showcasing an eclectic mix of soundsystems, selectors, deejays, acoustic acts and spoken word artists. Already confirmed is 18 year old selector (and Lily Allen favourite) Ted at the Controls, Scottish poet and wordsmith Elvis Mcgonagall and ‘The John Peel of Reggae’, DJ Dapper Dan. As well as a compelling and varied lineup of live acts, the Festival will feature a Kid’s Zone, after-hours fire-pit areas and street food stalls. The Main Barn Bar will be serving ice cold Red Stripe, Purbeck Cider and real ales from the Dorset Brewing Company as well as a wide range of wines and spirits. The three, dubbed part of a 'Reggae Revivalist' movement, have enjoyed careers that have taken them across the world, as they continue on an upward move, attracting international attention. Major Lazer Presents, a mixtape series spearheaded by Walshy Fire, is a project that all three artistes were invited to participate in at the beginning of their popularized careers.

In 2012, Major Lazer presented Chronixx on the Start A Fire mixtape. In 2014, Jesse Royal was presented on his mixtape called Royally Speaking. In 2016, Kabaka Pyramid had his turn with the release of Accurate, a lyrically driven collection, out to prove the artiste is both a deejay and a rapper. In October 2013, The Guardian highlighted Chronixx as the Jamaican artiste responsible for putting Rastafari back in music. Following the release of his Major Lazer-produced mixtape, Start A Fire, Chronixx enjoyed a mercurial rise to fame.

At 24 years old, the young singer has performed on The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon, BBC1Xtra concerts, and was even invited to Kenya as a peace ambassador during the nation's 2013 general elections. DEBUT ALBUM Now, Chronixx preps for the release of his debut album, Chronology. In May 2017, Skankin' Sweet, the third single from the album premiered exclusively on Billboard.com, following the R&B-influenced Majesty, and the dancehall-fuelled track called Likes. In an interview with Billboard.com, founder of Island Records, Chris Blackwell said: "I love what Chronixx is doing. It's not a new style of music, but it's not a rehash of old music either." For two weeks in April, Gimme Likkle singer Jesse Royal spent two weeks on tour with fellow reggae revivalist Chronixx (and the Zinc Fence Redemption) as he wrapped up the US west coast leg of the Chronology tour, which took the artistes through California, New Mexico, Texas and Florida.

Chronixx's touring will continue in July, on the US east coast, coinciding with the July 7 release of the album. Chronology pulls from a catalogue of work of previously released music like Smile Jamaica and Spanish Town Rocking. Chronixx's album was recorded in Brooklyn, Kingston, London and Chicago. Though the mercurial artiste is yet to release an album, Chronixx has become comparable to the likes of Rihanna and Kylie Jenner, who capitalise on their celebrity with fashion design. The Smile Jamaica singer landed a collaboration with Adidas SPEZIAL Spring-Summer 2017 Collection. ONETO WATCH Jesse Royal's Royally Speaking mixtape distinguished him as an artiste to watch on LargeUp.com, who are currently sponsors of his upcoming North American tour next month.

Named perhaps in ode to his late mother, or a testament to longevity in the music business, the 'Always Be Around Tour' will run for the month of July, with the Small Axe making multiple stops in the United States (New York, Vermont), as well as Nova Scotia, Quebec City and Ontario in Canada. Jesse Royal's marketability has extended into collaboration with street wear brand, Rockers NYC, to produce limited-edition T-shirts and tank tops. Kabaka Pyramid's career reflects similar activity to his musical brothers. Though yet to release an album, Kabaka Pyramid is the cover star for Reggaeville's Festiville Magazine 2017; this year's guide to all reggae summer festivals.

The Well Done deejay, is also in the midst of touring, as he too prepares for the release of his upcoming album, Contraband. While he attracted the interest of Walshy Fire for the prolific Major Lazer Presents, Kabaka also has the production power of Damian 'Jr Gong' Marley behind his debut. Since the release of the album's first single, Can't Breathe, the deejay-rapper has been traversing Europe with upcoming dates in Lisbon, Austria, Newfoundland, Denmark and France. Other Revivalists like Royal Blu, Runkus and the Ole Skl Bond, Dre Island and Jah9 have also been making the international rounds. Jah 9 recently completed the first leg of her Unafraid Tour, along the US west coast, performing in multiple cities in California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. This weekend, she begins her second leg, taking on European venues which will carry the Avocado singer through Germany, Denmark, France and Switzerland.

They just released a documentary about it, available on YouTube at youtube.com/heavyhammersoundSOUNDCLASHES || In 2007 the crew wins his first official dubplate clash, killing in Rome the Rome-based Love Massive in front of 1200 people, becoming quickly one of the most dangerous Italian sound killers. Few years later in 2010, the crew touches down in Stuttgart, Germany, to win the trophy of World War 3 Soundclash, a strictly dubplate war against Deebuzz from Germany, Captain C (ex Mighty Crown selector) from Japan, and Ruffpack from Switzerland. Few months later they represent Italy in the Riddim Clash 2010, the European n.1 international soundclash that take place in Dusseldorf, Germany, alongside sounds like City Lock from Germany, Guiding Star from France, Rootsman from Canada, Poison Dart from Antigua and Blunt Posse from New York; after winning all rounds Heavy Hammer brings for the first time the Riddim Clash trophy to Italy killing Blunt Posse in the dub fi dub segment, earning the world fame.
During 2011 and 2012 the crew has travelled the world to represent Italy and Europe in sound wars. They started joining in the world temple known as Amazura in New York, the world clash called Sound Fi Dead 2011 alongside sounds like Bass Odissey, Black Cat, Synemax and Tek 9; after a strong performance the crew wins the second round and then end up at the dub fi dub with Bass Odissey placing at the 2nd place in their very first clash in New York.

Just a week later they come back to Europe in a one-to-one clash in Wuppertal, Germany, against the Florida’s notorious Poison Dart Few months Later, in April 2012, they join the Irish&chin World Clash R.E.S.E.T. to face sounds like Killamanjaro, Bass Odissey, Black Blunt, Black Cat, Code Red from Jamaica and Rootsman from Canada. Even if that’s the first time the Hammers touch down the Jamaican island they conquer the third place, giving up only after a well discussed 4th round with Bass Odissey and Killamanjaro. It’s not over yet; during summertime Heavy Hammer flies to Japan for the Japan Soundclash Tour – the 1st one ever by a European sound – for 10 days of soundclashes and dubplate showcases winning every show, from Osaka to Fukuoka, Yokohama, Okayaman, Hyogo and many more places. The 2012 ends with the performance at Global Clash 2012 in Brooklyn, New York, where the sound faces off King Addies, Soul Supreme, Risky Dice from Japan, King Klepto from Canada and Madd Squadd from Jamaica. The 2014 sees Heavy Hammer back in the arena representing Europe in the UK Cup 2014 clash on 19th of April in London, alongside King Addies, Bass Odissey, Fire Links, the 2013 worldclash winner Metromedia from Jamdown, Jahman Nuclear and Little Sample out UK.

After a stunning performance of 5 rounds the Italians killers give up in the dub fi dub after a big discussed Bass Odissey performance, leaving a huge impact in the UK massive and “something to sekkle” between the two sounds in the final, that made the massive talking for weeks after the clash. The Heavy Hammer crew is composed by seven members: Raffa, Gecky, Gigi, Quasta, Lep, Boris and Charly. More than a decade in the business, collaborations with the most important reggae artists and worldwide selectors, hundreds of dancehalls and stages, as well as the unique dubplate box are the elements that give to the Heavy Hammer’s shows something exclusive that can’t be easily repeated. The dubplate masters from Italy are ready anytime to mash up your party! CREDITS; REGGAEVILLE \ HEAVY HAMMER [http://www.heavyhammer.it/bio/]

ANTHONY CRUZ is a singer, songwriter, producer, nephew of reggae singer “GARNET SILK” and his soulful voice and classy attire have many people referring to him as one of the most charismatic entertainers. There’s no mistaking the mesmerizing effect he has on the ladies. After a decade of holding his own in the music business, this talented singer is cruising his way to becoming one of Jamaica’s greatest singers; nominated for Best Male Reggae Artist in the British Reggae Industry Awards (B.R.I.A) 2012 and his "CRUZ CONTROL" album for REGGAEVILLE.com album of the year in Europe! He is also the recipient of the 2006 Reggaesoca Music Award for Best Reggae Combination “Too Bloody” featuring Grammy Winner Buju Banton in Florida.
Born ROWAN SMITH on December 17th, Anthony Cruz grew up in Mandeville, Manchester. Hailing from a talented musical family, with uncle Garnett Silk, cousin Aaron Silk and parents who were excellent singers – Cruz was convinced from a young age that he was destined to be a great singer. After graduating from Holmwood Technical High School, he migrated to the United States, spending a few years in New York before moving to Miami. Lindo decided to take him under his wings, working with the young singer to hone his rich vocals.

Under his management, Cruz’s career blossomed and the singer learned the ropes of the entertainment business. NST brings Korean roots to US reggae festival Posted : 2017-06-27 18:45Updated : 2017-06-27 18:44
Somehow, Jamaican roots music brings out the Korean roots in Korean musicians. A band of Korean musicians toured America last week for the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, a reggae festival featuring countless Jamaican music legends including Barrington Levy, Third World, Capleton, Keith & Tex and Lee Scratch Perry. They also played two extra shows with Perry. Noh Seon-teck, leader of Korean reggae group NST & The Soul Sauce, said it was an "honor" to meet Perry, whose studio Black Ark produced the greatest reggae recordings in history. "I want to show him another sound from Far East Asia," Noh told The Korea Times hours before boarding a plane to the U.S. last Thursday. "I am living in different roots and culture. I think it makes a different sound. I respect the reggae sound but I don't follow Jamaican roots and culture because I am Korean." They reportedly took the U.S. festival audience by surprise on June 17. "The reaction to our performance was overwhelming because so many people came to talk to us afterwards," said Oh Jeong-seok, NST's trumpeter whose dreadlocks hang down almost to his knees. "I almost felt like a star from the audience's reaction to us."

According to Oh, they sold almost all of the 400 CDs they brought, the band's debut CD "Back When Tigers Smoked."Chock full of nods to their Korean heritage, one standout song is "Riding a Jorang Horse" about the small-sized horses originating from Mongolia, now famed on Jeju Island. The lyrics describe riding the horses all around the world and spreading Korean culture, going to America to ride with Native Americans and turn the White House lawn into a rice paddy. "Western philosophy, which has been transformed into materialism, has already reached its limit, just like a cracked dry riverbed," the liner notes say about the song. "The roots of Oriental philosophy and thought… will be the lanterns of this era." Also notably on "Red Tiger," pansori singer Kim Yul-hee lends a classical touch, while on other tracks percussion/melodica player Smiley Song sings lyrics that could be mistaken for reggae greats like Big Youth and U-Roy were they not in Korean.

"The new album came out like a baby born to the world," Noh said. But Noh and his seven bandmates are no strangers to the world of music, each coming from a strong musical background. Noh previously performed with Korean reggae band Windy City from 2013 to 2015. Smiley Song also played for reggae-pansori band I&I Djangdan, and keyboardist Lee Jong-min also plays for Kiha and the Faces. Oh is a founding member of ska band Kingston Rudieska, formed 2004. Together with this project, they've already performed Japan's Fuji Rock Festival and Endless Summer Hong Kong International Reggae Ska Festival. "The Soul Sauce members are unique, like pirates," Noh said. "That's why I captured them. When I play with The Soul Sauce, I'm always happy!" "I got so much feedback from the audience about how impressed they were with Korean reggae," Oh said. "Many people didn't realize reggae music existed in Korea, so I was happy to bring some attention to the Korean reggae scene." The band receives some support from the Korea Creative Content Agency, which reimburses them for airline tickets and hotel costs on the day of performances.

Top-flight entertainer Scheduled to be held between July 7 and 9, the much-publicised event has enlisted the services of top-flight entertainer Aidonia, adding even more star-power to their line-up. Aidonia is scheduled to perform on July 7. His inclusion comes after fellow entertainer Popcaan headlined Dominica Republic staging some months ago. REGGAE Sumfest has no plans to yank embattled dancehall act Alkaline from this year's line-up, according to the show's promoters.
Alkaline — who is billed to perform at Catherine Hall Entertainment Centre in Montego Bay on July 21 — has been the subject of fiery criticism from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) for a lewd, gun-touting video titled After All. “Alkaline was booked several months ago and there was no controversy with him at that time... He has been advertised all around the world.

Thousands have booked and paid for airline tickets and have reservations, along with pre-online tickets for the show. To pull him from the line-up would be a breach of contract and have a very negative impact on the festival. As far as we know, Alkaline has done nothing illegal,” Josef Bogdanovich, chairman of Summerfest Promotions — organisers of Reggae Sumfest, told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.
On Sunday, it was reported that the police had launched a probe into the video, in which a woman appears to be performing a sexual act after removing what resembles a JCF uniform. The artiste's management and principals of Jay Will Films, makers of the video, have issued statements apologising, saying there was “no ill-intent meant”

Bogdanovich explained that the festival promotes the best of Jamaica's music. “Reggae Sumfest is the international premier reggae/dancehall festival in the world with an impeccable reputation in the last 25 years and we are positioned to make this celebration and landmark experience for all our visitors and local patrons,” he said.
Reggae Sumfest is not without controversy. In 2015, police prevented Gothic deejay Tommy Lee Sparta from taking the stage on Dancehall Night as he was restricted from performing in the Area One Police Division, which includes Trelawny, St James, Westmoreland and Hanover.

Reggae Sumfest kicks off on Sunday, July 16 with a beach party. It then moves into the Sumfest Sunset Yacht Party on July 17. The all-white party at Pier One is slated for July 18, followed by Sumfest Blitz on Wednesday, July 19. On July 20, Pier One will host the Sumfest Heavyweight Clash. The culmination of events will be at Catherine Hall on Friday, July 21 and Saturday, July 22.

Organisers of Groovin' in the Park are conducting an investigation into why singjay Busy Signal's microphone was cut during his set at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens, New York, on Sunday.
According to a source close to the promoters, organisers were not the ones responsible for the abrupt ending of the artiste's performance. “A statement is expected to be issued within the next 24 hours as to what really transpired. The organisers did not pull the plug on Busy,” the source told the Jamaica Observer yesterday. Prior to the premature end, Busy Signal — who was making his US debut — was delivering a solid set and had the audience going with Bedroom Bully, Step Out, Nah Go A Jail Again, Unknown Number, and One More Night. Sensing that his performance was about to be ended, he implored organisers not to shorten his set.

“Mi reach a the venue from 3 o'clock and mi suppose to perform at five, and now a hours later. I sat and watch everyone perform, so nuh try cut my time. Wi have a contract so unoo mus' line-up unoo show so artiste can perform on time,” he stated. “Mi wan' perform for mi people dem cuz a mi first time yah suh,” he pleaded. His words fell on deaf ears.
“If mi can't perform, R Kelly can't perform either,” Busy Signal said angrily before handing over the microphone. Overhead, a New York City Police Department helicopter circled the venue, while police on the ground braced for any unrest. This resulted in a chorus of boos as MC Ras Clem of Groovin Radio pleaded with the crowd for calm.

The angry throng was not impressed, and took out their frustration by booing representatives from a number of companies who were handing out prizes. Before the drama, patrons were musically satisfied. Tarrus Riley opened the event at approximately 2:00 pm. His smooth, melodious vocals had the crowd singing to Backbiter, Far Away, Never Leave I, and She's Royal. Halfway into his 45-minute set, he invited British singer Estelle to join him on Come Over and Love Like Ours. Sharing a two-hour segment, Lloyd Parks and We The People Band, U-Roy, Ken Boothe, Leroy Sibbles and Freddie McGregor took fans back to the rocksteady era. Each performance was well-rehearsed and backed by a reggae orchestra directed by Ibo Cooper.

The Lennox Hill Baptist Choir was there for patrons who did not get a chance to attend Sunday morning church services. They were incorporated into the sets of Boothe and Sibbles. U-Roy, Boothe, Sibbles and McGregor were recognised for their outstanding contribution to the music industry by United States Congresswoman Dr Una Clarke. She also presented McGregor with Keys to the City of Mount Vernon. Although disappointed with the Busy Signal gaffe, the majority of patrons remained to watch headliner R Kelly's performance. The American R&B singer was captivating and had the females singing along to his many hits such as Wine For Me, Flirt, Bump and Grind and 12 Play. American singer Stephanie Mills, who was scheduled to perform, left the venue after the Busy Signal episode.

TODAYS FEATURED SOUND

KILLAMANJARO SOUND SYSTEM
Founded in the summer of 1969, Killamanjaro is a Jamaican sound system best known for their clashes and large amount of classic reggae dubplates. It is owned by Noel "Papa Jaro" Harper and named after Mount Kilimanjaro. The name was changed to "Killamanjaro" after having established a reputation of being a good clash sound.
"Jaro" is notable for being a top sound in both the live-artist era of the 1980s, where it launched the careers of top dancehall artists at the time, such as Early B, Super Cat, Jim Kelly, Burro Banton, Puddy Roots, and Ninjaman, and the 1990s dubplate era, where the sound went on a soundclash killing spree behind selector/mic man Ricky Trooper.Killamanjaro have played globally, including winning the World Clash twice and touring the United States, Europe and Japan. They were also involved with what many consider the "greatest clash of all-time", King Addies (USA) vs. Killamanjaro (Jamaica).
In 1999, Killamanjaro released a tribute album to Garnett Silk, Killamanjaro remembers Garnett Silk.

CONCERT REVIEW

KABAKA PYRAMID IN LONDON, UK - JUNE 22ND 2017
Kabaka Pyramid – the third Jamaican reggae resurgence representative to tour the UK of late – performed to a select yet enthusiastic crowd at Islington Academy on Thursday night. Originally planned for Brixton Electric the succeeding week, the show had moved to a smaller venue and more favoured date. Following recent sell outs by Chronixx and Protoje, the 800 capacity Academy was about half-full. But those who came sang enthusiastically to a set that mixed Kabaka and his Bebble Rockers band’s love of reggae, hip hop and dancehall; his own catalogue and those of his formative favourites. The sound was a little piercing up top and muddy below – yet clear enough to suffice. Dressed in red slacks and a red gold jacket with squares on the sleeves, the Rastafari rhymer prowled the stage with lyrical intent. His scathing political polemics were apposite for London and the U.K’s difficult times. “Capitalism mash up enough things. Especially here” he said of the Grenfell tower block fire between No Capitalist and Worldwide Love. “They bun up the building and let the poor people suffer.”
He also connected using his lighter side. He joked that “Wenger messing up my life” regarding his beloved Arsenal’s fortunes. During Chronixx combination Mi Alright – the first tune to wheel - he challenged those singing along, asking if they had ever bathed in a river (ironically, river-swimming is now a trend among London’s bourgeoisie).

Phase two of the mission shifted from reggae to hip hop. Kabaka rapped convincingly in a US accent over the rhythm to Still D.R.E.; shared his combo with London’s Akala, Giants, sung by special guest Marshall; and faced down his guitarist Shackair McQueen for his Accurate Mixtape self-battle Kabaka Vs Pyramid, based on Biggie Smalls’ Gimme The Loot. The energy ignited in dancehall with the mixtape’s Ring The Alarm/Stalag, and a vicious Lock Down Di Place bearing choice verses by Capleton, Sizzla and Buju. Kabaka was demanded back to the stage for Prophecies – reviving poetess Fabian Miranda’s 1977 classic – the vocal hook recreated by backing singer Nicolene Brown. The encore included signature song Well Done - which seemed aimed straight for the Brexit government’s head. Only one unreleased nugget was revealed from forthcoming album Contraband. Friends Like These - about false companions - was a departure from the political to the personal. “Not every song has to be deep and bun fyah. Some are everyday reality”.

The huge cheer for current single Can't Breathe - as big as for any cover or collab – suggested that while there is still work to be done in the notoriously conservative London market, his direction and hard graft are paying off. Opening support came from Dennis Brown’s sunnily disposed daughter Marla singing her own and dad’s material (we’re still waiting for a live link up with Kabaka on their Hunt You Down). Yearning voiced singer/deejay Randy Valentine was another cheerful presence, belting out Sweet Reggae Music and Lock Me Up off debut album Break The Chain and Mama Said and Wake The Town from follow up Still Pushing. Both were backed by London’s Soul Rebel band. Host Seani B was so impressed with Randy’s hat that he asked to borrow it for Shabba’s show the next weekend.

TODAYS FEATURED ARTIST

Sharon Peterkin was born in Spanish Town and raised in Portmore St. Catherine. She attended Bridgeport Secondary School and had an interest in obtaining a musical career from as early as 15 years old. This passion became her motivating drive to excel in that field and lead her to the studios of Shocking Vibes, Sly and Robbie’s Taxi Label Company and producers Steelie and Clevie. Her very first recording, a Dancehall single entitle ‘Stick to you man” was produced by Steelie and Clevie.Know as Lady Shabba back then and In spite of her obvious potential of becoming a mega Dancehall artiste, Sharon experienced some extreme challenges. She recalls hanging out at studio for hours and even being locked out but most disappointing of all is being denied a great opportunity. Lady Shabba did demos for some of the most notable producers in the business including King Jammys which she recorded a single entitle “Ram Ram” on Jammys Kingston 11 Label. The song reportedly did well in the Caribbean and shot to the top of Trinidad Dancehall charts.

But it was long after its success that Lady Shabba learned of its impact and the fact that a promoter had travelled to the island to book her for an event but was told she had died. Lady Shabba was aggressive and understandably so but her attitude was not good for her music and was often time illustrated not only in her performance but lyrically. She knew she had to tone down, she needed a change she became a mother and views life from a different perspective so in 1999 Lady Shabba became Ruffi-Ann. It took some time for Ruffi-Ann to readjust as she wanted to make a significant impact on the industry, she wanted to sing about issues that touched her heart and become an advocate for the poor, she put her thoughts on paper and eventually she found a song entitle ‘Save the juvenile’.Save the juvenile became a hit without much marketing and promotion behind it, the feeling was encouraging and one Ruffi-Ann had anticipated for years. Past experiences and challenges had made Ruffi-Ann smarter, hence her decision to form her own label Sugar Pan Production. The recording company is designed to create easier access for young talented artistes to showcase their skills. However Ruffi-Ann was first to release songs on the label, her first three songs are entitle, “Sex sex sex”, “Me Puttus” and “You are” featuring Thrilla U.Throughout her career, Ruffi-Ann has performed on several major shows in Jamaica including STING, Pepsi Teen Spalsh, Champion in Action and West Kingston, Jamborie, St. Mary Mi Come From and Spring Break. Since the release of her “Save the Juvenile” single produced by Charmax Music she went on to release another entitle “No wuk no deh” on the Suger Pan Production label with much marketing and promotional activities behind it to influence its popularity. This trait she intends to sustain until Ruffi-Ann accomplishes her ultimate goal, that of becoming an internationally acclaimed Reggae artiste.
